Continuous learning is the cornerstone of career growth. Staying updated with the latest trends, enhancing your skill set, and adapting to change are crucial. Enroll in courses that align with your career goals, whether online or offline. Read books, journals, and articles to gain new insights and knowledge. Attending workshops and seminars offers opportunities to learn from industry experts and network with peers.

Action Step: Dedicate a few hours each week to learning something new, whether through reading, taking a course, or attending a workshop.

Setting meaningful goals is essential as they provide direction and motivation. When your goals align with your values, they become a powerful force driving your actions. Identify your core values to understand what truly matters to you in your career. Set SMART goals—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Break down your larger goals into smaller, manageable tasks.

Action Step: Write down your top three career goals for the year and break them into actionable steps, reviewing and adjusting them regularly.

Cultivating a growth mindset helps you see challenges as opportunities to learn and grow rather than as obstacles. Embrace challenges and view them as learning experiences rather than setbacks. Learn from feedback, seeing constructive criticism as a tool for improvement. Celebrate your efforts by focusing on your progress rather than just the end result.

Action Step: Reflect on a recent challenge, identifying what you learned from the experience and how it has contributed to your growth.

Networking strategically opens doors to new opportunities, collaborations, and mentorship. Attend industry events such as conferences, meetups, and seminars to meet like-minded professionals. Leverage social media platforms like LinkedIn to connect with industry peers and thought leaders. Build genuine relationships by focusing on meaningful connections rather than just expanding your network.

Action Step: Identify three industry events to attend this year and list people you’d like to connect with.

Practicing self-reflection helps you understand your strengths and weaknesses, allowing you to make informed decisions about your career path. Keep a journal where you regularly write down your thoughts, experiences, and lessons learned. Set aside a specific time each week for reflection on your progress and areas for improvement. Seek feedback from colleagues and mentors to gain different perspectives.

Action Step: Start a weekly reflection journal, including what you accomplished, the challenges you faced, and what you learned.

Taking the initiative demonstrates leadership and proactivity, showing your commitment to career growth and willingness to go above and beyond. Propose new ideas and suggest improvements or new projects. Volunteer for challenging tasks to develop new skills and gain visibility. Be a problem solver by looking for solutions rather than just pointing out problems.

Action Step: Identify a project or area in your current role where you can take the initiative, outline a plan, and propose it to your supervisor.

Why Embracing Challenges Can Supercharge Your Career Growth- If you're feeling a bit stuck or at odds with your job right now, it might just be the start of something awesome! That feeling of friction or tension you're facing in your career? It's like the secret ingredient that can feel uncomfortable but provide for amazing change – both professionally and personally.

We often see friction as a roadblock rather than the nudge we need to challenge ourselves to think differently, come up with new ideas, and become better versions of ourselves. Without that push, we'd be in our comfort zones forever, missing out on discovering what we're truly capable of achieving.

Imagine a life without any friction at work. We'd probably be stuck in the same place, not making those big leaps that lead to incredible accomplishments and personal happiness.

Let's not fear friction. Instead, let's welcome it with open arms as a way to level up in our careers. When we acknowledge the challenges and difficulties, it's like we're setting ourselves up for some serious personal and professional growth.

It's important to support anyone going through a tough time at work. Those challenges? They're opportunities in disguise. They help people become tougher, learn new skills, and handle all the crazy stuff that comes with the working world. Creating an environment that supports and understands this can make us stronger and more capable individuals.

Let's remove the negativity around friction.

It's not just a roadblock; it's a driving force for good change and personal growth. When we face friction head-on, we're saying, "I can do this!," and that's empowering.

Friction is just a natural part of the career journey. It tells us that we're stretching ourselves and aiming higher. So, when we feel friction, let's tackle it head on, knowing that it's going to push us closer to our goals.

Ever thought about identifying exactly where that friction's coming from? It's like mapping out your challenges, giving you a better idea of what you're dealing with in your career. Once you know that, navigating your path becomes a whole lot clearer.

Embracing friction and all the growth it brings is like rocket fuel for your career. By changing how we see, support, and tackle challenges, we unlock a whole world of possibilities, resilience, and serious career power.

Let's welcome those challenges, knowing they're molding us into stronger, more capable individuals and grab the opportunities ahead!

Mindset Strategy: Embracing Challenges for Career Supercharge

1. Reframe Friction as Growth Fuel:

 - Perception shift: View friction as a catalyst for growth rather than a roadblock.

 - Understand that challenges prompt innovative thinking and personal development.

 - Embrace friction as the secret ingredient to shake up and elevate your career.

2. Acknowledge Challenges for Personal and Professional Growth:

 - Recognize challenges as opportunities for both personal and professional advancement.

 - A mindset that welcomes difficulties sets the stage for meaningful development.

 - Understand that without challenges, one remains in the comfort zone, limiting true potential.

3. Supportive Environment for Growth:

 - Foster an environment that values and supports individuals navigating challenges.

 - Acknowledge that facing difficulties at work builds resilience and new skill sets.

 - Encourage a culture where challenges are seen as stepping stones toward personal and professional empowerment.

4. Positive Approach to Friction:

 - Shift away from the negativity surrounding challenges; view them as disguised opportunities.

 - Understand that overcoming challenges makes individuals stronger and more capable.

 - Approach friction with confidence, signaling readiness for growth and positive change.

5. Identify and Navigate Challenges Strategically:

 - Map out challenges to gain clarity on their origins and nature.

 - Strategic identification enables a clearer path to navigate through career obstacles.

 - Recognize that facing challenges head-on is a powerful stance, propelling one closer to career goals.

Formula

Embracing Challenges + Reframing Friction = Powerful Growth Mindset

Key Takeaway:

Embracing challenges and reframing friction as a driving force for growth is a powerful mindset strategy. By acknowledging challenges, fostering a supportive environment, maintaining a positive approach, and strategically navigating obstacles, individuals unlock a world of possibilities, resilience, and career empowerment.

Challenges are not setbacks but opportunities to become stronger, more capable professionals ready to seize future opportunities.

In our crazy, fast-paced lives, we're all working hard. But you know what often gets lost in the shuffle? Yes, it's taking the time to work on ourselves! Believe it or not, putting in the effort to grow personally is a big deal. It's like unlocking your full potential and finding deeper meaning in life. How to advance your career through personal growth? Keep reading to see more.

First things first, learning is the key to this personal growth thing. It's not just about getting better at your job. It's about diving into new stuff - like picking up a hobby or soaking up insights from everywhere. Learning opens up our minds, makes us more awesome at tackling life's challenges, and boosts our confidence.

Then there's self-reflection. That's like looking into a mental mirror and getting real about yourself - your thoughts, feelings, and how you act. When we dig deep like this, we figure out where we can improve, celebrate what makes us awesome, and get a better grip on who we are.

Setting goals is a big deal too. Not just any goals, but ones that mean something to us. When our dreams line up with what we value, it's like we've got a roadmap to success – both personally and professionally. These goals give us a sense of direction, keeping us motivated, and reminding us why we're doing what we're doing.

Now, the major issue is accountability. When we track our progress and listen to advice from trusted folks, it keeps us on track. It's about owning up to our actions and using feedback to keep growing. Think of it as a superpower for constant improvement.

Starting this self-improvement journey? It's not as scary as it seems. Just start by being patient with yourself and showing some self-love. These two things set a positive tone for growth, making it easier to tackle challenges with a smile and bounce back when things get tough.

You know those little steps you take every day? They add up! Dedicating time to learn something new, practicing mindfulness, or investing in relationships – it all adds up to our happiness and fulfillment.

Working on yourself isn't a one-time thing; it's a life-changer. It's about making our lives richer, more balanced, and super meaningful. When we put ourselves first, we unlock this whole new level of awesome. Dive into this self-discovery adventure and see what amazing things we're capable of!

Remember, our power to shape our lives. Let's begin this journey of self-improvement and watch how our inner growth changes everything around us!

Learn from the mistakes I made.

Learn from the mistakes I made.– I had a plan to find my dream career, so I thought.

But I made some key mistakes along the way.

Learn from the mistakes I made.

In my early 20’s I had returned from extensive backpacking travel abroad. I had successfully delayed the obvious “get a job” conversation with my sponsors, my parents for the last 12 months.

I made appointments with the most prominent recruitment companies at the time and armed with actual copies of my Honours Degree, great references from part-time work I had completed post my degree (Teaching English in South America) and I had a CV which I had spent all of 15 minutes on.

Mistake No 1

I was ready to find my dream CAREER!

The appointments at the recruitment companies went well, in fact too well, they all offered me a job………….. as a Recruitment Consultant.

Learn from The Mistakes I made

This was definitely not what I was looking for and not my idea of a career;

I was looking for a stimulating career and aspired being in business.

Wanting to work in an environment where every day was different, and work with diverse people.

The kind of work that I could use to make a change for good and have a positive impact in people’s lives.

I wanted to be able to be strategic and get creative all in a day’s job.

But most importantly

I wanted to have fun, meet new people, make friends, and belong to a tribe.

Mistake No 2

I was prepared to completely outsource my career search to a stranger

Learn from The Mistakes I made

What I did not know back then was that I was prepared to completely outsource my career search to a few random recruiters. And as good as they may have been at theirs jobs, none of them had a vested interest in what I needed or desired from a Career.

I returned home from a hard week of career hunting with 4 job offers on the table. My parents were delighted as this truly marked the official cutting of the apron strings. (1x 4 year degree + 1x year typical antipodean backpacking around Europe = they were ready to cut me loose)

Mistake No 3

I chose the job with the company that had the plushest offices.

Learn from The Mistakes I made

I then did what any intelligent career seeker would- chose the job with the company that had the nicest offices. The salary was pretty much the same over all 4 offers so that wasn’t a deciding factor.

I considered if I needed to be going to work every day, I better go to work in an office building that looked good. Plus, I wanted me own desk, sharing was not an option for a serious businessperson in their new career.

It wasn’t all doom and gloom.

As it turned out those random recruiters back in 1996 were not only good at their jobs but as luck would have it so was I. In addition to this I was fortunate enough to be teamed up with an amazing mentor. She coached me through the industry paces and took a keen interest in my development.

Learn from The Mistakes I made

Take charge and stay in charge of your career.

In summary learn from the mistakes that I made, get strategic in your approach and don’t think that recruiters alone will find you your dream job, never outsource your career to a stranger, and don’t take a job because it fits into someone else definition of success.

How to be an Expert in your career.

How to be an Expert in your Career- Gone are the days of the generalist. Becoming an expert in your career gives you authority and power. You own your career, and the company owns your job. It is therefore to your benefit to become an expert in your career and leverage your growth.

How to become an expert in your career is an actionable process. Follow the steps outlined in this blog on ‘How to be an expert in your career’ and go ahead and leave a comment so I can help you with the strategy.

Wikipedia~ An expert has a broad and deep competence in terms of knowledge, skill, and experience through practice & education in a particular field

I have broken down how to become an expert in your career into 3 actionable steps.

Note: This body of knowledge is the result of my work as a career strategist for over a decade. My clients are all established and emerging experts in their niche, seeking clarity, confidence, and community to power them forward in their careers. This is the work of my signature career strategy process. #TheCareerStrategyFormula

Step 1: Know Yourself.

A solid understanding of yourself is essential to achieve expert status. You simply cannot short circuit this step. Thinking your good at something is not the right playing field. You need to know exactly what you are good at and why.

This is the hardest part to achieving expert status. This is where the real work begins, where the rubber hits the road.

Knowing yourself is what differentiates ‘expert’ from ‘good’

What motivates you, what keeps you engaged, what are you curious about, what specific tasks do you enjoy doing and why, what is it that you always do, that no one needs to ever remind you to do? These are all questions to help identity your career identity

Your career identity = your strengths and I teach that there three key elements that form your career identity.

What you do, your skills, job title & duties, qualifications, and career history.

Why you do it; your drivers, talents, and motivators and lastly

How you do it, which is your unique behaviours and patterns.

Developing an authentic career identity is the path to expert status. Knowing why you do what you do and how you do it, not just what you do is step1 in how to become and expert in your career.

Step 2: Laser Focus

Now that you know yourself, a laser focus is needed to dial into situations that call for your strengths. Develop a laser focus for situations that enhance your strengths and avoid situations that don’t, or worse call on your weaknesses.

The most successful ‘expert’ people are always searching for new opportunities to use their strengths. Look for projects, collaborations, teams, and even ad hoc ways to steer your strengths into focus. What you focus on improves, so it makes senses that you would focus on the situations that call for you to be an expert in your career.

Knowing what ‘works for you’ at work and what does not is the difference between expert and good.

Step 3: Get Real with the World of Work

Trying to be good at everything could be keeping you from reaching your full potential in your strongest areas. Gone are the days of the traditional generalist. Becoming and expert in your career needs you to get real with the world of work.

This step invites you to consider what of your strengths are needed in the world of work and how getting real about them will help you achieve expert status in your career.

Don’t get lured into pleasing everyone and being good at everything. Becoming an expert in your career is rewarding both personally and financially. The more of an expert you become in your career, the more in demand you are. And demand creates opportunities.

Getting real with the world of work starts with these 2 key Q’s

What problems does the world have that you can solve?

How are you positioned to help others?

Your answers here will be the fuel to charge up your expert status in your career.

The more you enhance your strengths the closer to ‘expert’ status you will be. I hope that this these 3 steps on how to become an expert in your career, inspire you. You deserve to have the career you want, and you deserve to be an expert in your career.

And as the classic saying goes ‘Go expert or go home’

In summary know yourself, stay laser focused and get real with the world of work in order to become an expert in your career. I wish I had access to this knowledge when I was in my 20’s and started out in my career. It would have saved me years of the wrong work and jump started me to become and expert in my career sooner.

How to Power your Career?

In physics, power is the amount of energy transferred: How to power your career is more mindset than it is action step. Commit to these top 4 mindsets to power your career and your career will always be powered.

How to Power your Career 1:

Own it- there is no straight line, decide what you want and pursue it.

Assume the attitude of the buyer of your career, not the seller of your skills and go out and own it. Get clear on the things that light you up in your career and laser focused in finding situations that call for this. Life is too short to play small with your talents and playing small won’t help the world.

One day or day one- you choose?

You own your career, and the company owns your job. The hardest part is to develop and unrelenting belied in yourself and sell out to your own power. We are not taught this in traditional education but the opposite. Work hard, get a good qualification, work harder, and get a good job and the company will look after you. The great mistruth.

Fact remains that no one really found success without defining it themselves and being courageous enough to pursue it. The individual success stories of today all come with their own unique zig zag path and often -pick- yourself- up-and -dust-yourself -off tempo.

Is there any evidence in the world of the opposite? Maybe yes- however the truth to power your career is to assume the attitude of the buyer of your career and go and get it.

How to Power your Career 2:

Trust your intuition- listen to the guidance you have within, lean into your own inner truth.

You are our own guru. You ultimately know what is best for yourself at any given moment. The trick is to tune in and listen. That is power to your career.

I will raise red flags whenever I am approached for my career startegy work to be the ‘silver bullet’ in someone’s professional world. There is no quick fix and there can be no external magic wand. Yes, you can have the career you want, but the desire needs to be backed by a clear strategy, fuelled with your own innate power.

Leaning into your own inner truth means quietening the noise on the outside and turning up the volume of the voice on the inside.

Intuition belongs to us all. Accessing your inner truth and hearing the true voice of your intuition is the greatest gift that you can give to yourself. I have spoken on intuition and even publicly debated on live radio about intuition vs rational thought (Future CEOs - Intuition vs Rational Thought - CliffCentral)

How to Power your Career 3:

Connection – strong, long term and ever-growing relationships, that you nurture and actively grow.

We humans are hard wired for connection. In a pandemic and post pandemic world where virtual has been the point of contact, we intuitively seek to deepen our connections.

You cannot truly power your career without the people you have nurtured around you professionally.

Who has got you to where you are in your career? Your network and connections that you have nurtured to date it a powerful bank of equity. Don’t underestimate the power of your connections to unlock new opportunities.

At every new stage of our careers, we require not only new thinking but a new network too. The people you know professionally and the people whom you don’t yet know professionally are the centre of your network.

Deepening and nurturing your connections is a long-term consistent strategy where you nurture and actively grow. Develop a clear strategy, stay consistent and invest in the people equity that you already have. As a good rule of thumbs start with how you can serve them before you ask for their help.

How to Power your Career 4:

Deep self-care - honouring your mental & physical health consistently.

The oxygen mask falls from the plane to you first. Investing power into your career must come from a place of deep self – care and boundaries before burnout.

In my career strategy work I have seen too many incredibly talented and driven people hit burnout. There are many reasons how burn out happens and that may well be for another blog.

Today make me a promise that you will honour your mental and physical health Above All Else at work.

Taking care of yourself beyond ‘the spa’ is as important for your company as it is for yourself. No one wants to drive you to burn out and no one can be held responsible for this other than you.

Here are my tops tips for deep self-care to ensure that you can power your career from a place of health and abundance and not an empty tank

Take frequent PAUSE during the day, week, month, and year.

Practise being and not doing when you are not working; breathe work and meditation gentle movement will help with this.

Spend time in nature and away from your workspace when you can to ground yourself.

Drink more water than caffeine and eat a largely green based diet

In summary Own it, trust your intuition, connection and deep self-care are the 4 parts ot how to power your career. I wish I had access to this knowledge when I was in my 20’s and started out in my career. It would have saved me years of the wrong work and jump started me to power my career.

How do you find your passion?

Ask most people you know, and they draw a blank. Why is it that such a fundamental element of our careers & lives is so elusive? How do you find your passion actually? Most of us grapple with this question for most of our adult lives. Its overwhelming at the very least, and the answer often only comes after friction.

I believe that we are all innately passionate about many topics and have many varied passions. We also develop and build our passions over time. By nature, the very definition of these passions often resides within our ‘hobbies & interests’ and hardly ever falls into the category of our careers.

Passion – a feeling of intense enthusiasm towards something.

‘Passion’ is often over traded in the world of work, with organizational design dictating to us what it should be. This is where passion & and work in the same sentence is cliched at best. For example your Sales team calls for a passion for selling; your finance team calls for a passion for systems, your HR team calls for a passion for people etc.. Sadly, a complete misalignment with the potential of the unique passions which we all possess.

Again, why is it that such a fundamental element of our careers & lives is so elusive to us?

When we experience friction within our work, and careers we look to our passions to lead the way. Therein lies the rub when we can’t identify or pinpoint what our passions are. Those rare individuals who can confidently answer the question How do you find your passion have learnt the hard way. In other words, things had to fall apart before they found their passion. They had to hit some form of friction in their careers before they invested in finding their passion.

Bottom line is none of us know exactly how we feel about anything until we try it. My best advice therefore is that passion is the result of action.

Q: How do you find your passion?

A: By a trial-and-error process.

*Make a list of the type of work that you think you will enjoy and then commit to ‘trying’ it in a specific timeframe.

Try it by volunteering, or offering a colleague your help, you can also consider pro bono and project work. Your list should include possibility thinking where the ‘trying it out’ could be limiting. That’s not a limit to you to explore people who actually do this work. You can connect with them to ask what it is like.

If this sounds uncomfortable for you to do, then it is exactly the thing that you must do.

Our comfort zone is the radar for the places we must grow beyond.

In my career strategy work I have learnt that our purpose often feeds something greater than ourselves.

So, you can start by looking at what causes, missions and movements speak to you the most. This is where you will start to find your passion. Amongst the emotion that you feel for things you want to change or are driven to change.

If there aren’t any causes missions or movements that speak to you right now, try working through these three prompts.

Reflect on what you would change in the world if you could.
What problems need solving that you can fix?

Do not just think this through – commit to writing it out.

You will soon notice patterns and the benefits of getting it out of your head and onto a piece of paper are immeasurable. The power of writing offers you clarity and sorting through the maze of emotions and thoughts.

If boredom is the antithesis of passion, then passion is the result of living life and getting involved and interested in many things

In short here is a quick formula to consider

Passion is the result of Action.

Action is the result of a mindset shift.

A mindset shift is the result of an emotion.

An emotion is the result of an experience – good or bad.

An experience is the result of living a full life.

Living a full life is the result of energy.

Therefore Energy + Action = Passion. So, live your life to its fullest!

Your thoughts?

Overwhelm on LinkedIn is real.

Now more than ever, we must take tangible steps to reduce the inevitable overwhelm that we experience online. To show up authentically and with inspiration.

The world needs to hear your voice, and I am passionate about teaching you the skills to reduce overwhelm. You deserve to create the kind of opportunities that increasing your visibility on LinkedIn provides.

They are many reasons why this overwhelm exists; namely

Spam & Inappropriate contact

A cluttered and irrelevant feed

Look’ism and the beast of comparison

Being Uninspired by your network

Or simply the time it takes to show up authentically

Primarily, I believe that one of the biggest reasons comes from not knowing enough, but rather knowing too much.

LINKEDIN IS A TOOL NOT A STRATEGY

Don’t expect the platform to be all things to you. You need to set the strategy of what the platform should deliver. It is our job to use the powerful tool that LinkedIn is with strategic intent. It is our job to get clear on what we want to achieve online.

A goal without a strategy to achieve it is just a wish.

A strategy without execution to action it is just hope.

We can hope and wish all we want on LinkedIn. Or we get strategic and take these 4 action steps to reduce the overwhelm.

Action Step No 1

Make sure that you have LinkedIn downloaded on your phone. The android and apple app is super user friendly and as a result much easier to navigate than the desktop version. Moreover, zoom gloom and being sedentary does not inspiration make.

The phone app will support you to access the 1 mindset strategy that I teach. ‘While the kettle boils’ , yes we take LinkedIn very seriously and treat it with the professional respect it commands. This doesn’t mean we must be in work mode on the platform.

Some of my most inspiring posts and connections often comes from accessing the platform via the phone app. Most importantly, while life happens around me I am a part of it. Rather than being holed away in my office checking out LinkedIn.

This action step may seem obvious to some. However, the App over Desktop debate will always win for me. Subsequently, when I’m at my desk, I will still chose to access my profile via the app.

This helps me reduce the overwhelm. Above all it ensures that LinkedIn remains light and inspiring for me, as opposed to becoming a drag and uninspiring.

Action Step No 2

Create a shared folder on your phone, that you can access from other devices. This will serve as a main contact point for; all things inspirational to post, people to meet, replies and comments to save.

How this plays out; while you are on LinkedIn, and you may see something or someone you would like to follow up on, however, you do not have the time to do so then. Save the info. to this share folder to action later.

As a result, you completely reduce the overwhelm.

Big time saver and overwhelm reducer.

Furthermore, you may even decide to sub divide your shared folder into more specific categories for instance

Ideas for content

People to reach out to

Jobs to investigate

Companies to research

General Notes

Can you already see what a big reduction in overwhelm this will make?

Action Step No 3

Every post on LinkedIn has 3 grey buttons in the top righthand corner.

The reason why I call these the ‘Magic 3 Buttons’ is due to the following;

Mute content or posts you do not wish to see.

Report and Hide the same which is irrelevant for you

Save & Share content.

This function is a wonderful tool provided by LinkedIn; to clean up and manage your home feed, to help reduce the overwhelm and make it more relevant.

Make sure that you use these 3 buttons vigorously to prompt the algorithms to send you more relevant content.

This is a two-part Blog of Mindset & Action steps to help you deal with a retrenchment.
Being retrenched is hard.

Part 2: 3 Action Step Strategies to help you to deal with retrenchment

Being retrenched is hard. I honour and respect the intense emotions and roller coaster ride that the process can take you on. These three action steps will offer you something to get on with once you’ve dealt with where your mind is.

Be sure to read Part 1 – 3_Mindset_Strategies_to_help_you_to_deal_with_Retrenchment

1. Get accurate & Creative–

Scrutinize your bank account – how much time do you have before you need to draw a salary?

Have a clear timeline in mind. Then, challenge yourself to think laterally and consider what else can you do to generate an income? Be creative here and think who needs your help. Lead to serve and you could be surprised at how many people will willingly pay you for something you can do to help them.

For example, I had a superb client with a compliance / legal background who used his time to help his family members negotiate better insurance and medical aid deals with their providers by scrutinising their contracts. He came up with an hourly rate and a success rate, ie: a percentage of the money he saved his relatives from clawing back in their contracts. A win win gig that helped extend his savings and kepe him afloat whilst he looked for formal employment.

If you’re not sure where to start with this strategy give yourself 7 days to write down a minimum of 10 things you can do / make/ create/ help others with. 10 ideas every day for 7 days. Don’t edit the list until you have a minimum of 70 ideas. Some maybe wild and some maybe whacky, who cares, this is your time to try your hand at something that doesn’t look like work.

Tune into your own creative force and back yourself to stimulate cash flow from this list. And if it feels odd ask yourself ‘what’s the worst that can happen’. You may find, like my Johannesburg based marketing client that your daily jogs become shared dog walking for the neighbour events. This was never going to pay my clients bond, but it gave him a great chunk of satisfaction and he earned the admiration and respect of his community. Instead of their pity. This led to a contact of a neighbour reaching out and enquiring about his background which led to an invitation to apply to a newly created role. Turned out the role wasn’t right him, but the next one was and he was fitter and more confident than he has ever been when gainfully employed.

2. Invest strategic time on LinkedIn –

Have a clear focus, develop a sustainable daily strategy, be smart & and work smart and do not waste your time.

Read the blog I wrote on 4 Ways to plan your Linkedin strategy to get you started right.

Now is not the time to hide on LinkedIn. Now is the time to share your voice- even if it shakes at first.

Strengthen your online brand. Share value and be consistent.

Don’t fall victim to ‘scrolling the feed’ check your notifications and then use the search functionality to connect with someone new. Learn how to use # hashtags to follow content that inspires you.

Get strategic on the platform.

Be consistent in posting and strive to Create, Educate, Inspire & Uplift your connections and broader network. Don’t expect a pity party; be slick and share your thought leadership.

What expertise can you share? Start a movement with and use hashtags strategically. Participate in ‘community’ and do all that you can to show up for yourself & for your network.

Give in order to Get and LinkedIn will become a super charged platform of your enhanced visibility delivering opportunity after opportunity and options for you.

3. Connect Connect Connect –

Reach out to your network; not in an icky sticky way asking for help, please think & plan how can you serve them first before asking them to do something for you. Strategically place yourself top of mind by offering to help or sharing something relevant with them.

Create a categorized list of your network starting with your career champions. These are the people that you have worked closely with and can champion you. Designation wise they can be from 3 areas

1. Above peer level- who you have reported too.

2. On peer level- people alongside you on the same level.

3. Below peer level- people who reported to you.

Traditionally we are reminded to maintain contact with those above peer champions who can provide a reference for us; however, the other two designations are equally as key.

Intentionally and with daily deliberate habits work through the list and book virtual meet up’s and coffee connect calls with as many of your existing network. Do not underestimate the power of a well-timed meeting and how this can lead to huge possibilities.

Equally so actively focus your efforts on growing your network with new connections. Use LinkedIn as a strategic tool in this regard and especially the search functionality to highlight to you the diverse amount of people that you don’t know. 780, million professionals and you can search by title, industry, qualification, location and even keyword.

Get search savvy and grow your circles of influence.

Trigger Warning! 960 employees have been laid off from LinkedIn across sales/recruitment divisions this year alone. If you are not being strategic enough on the platform this could bring you bad news daily- here’s what you can do to stop that from happening; Know, Trust & Believe at your core that you are inherently resilient, inventive and creative!

When tested, you will discover that your inner strength far outweighs your outer reality.

Sell out to staying positive.
