What is your online identity and why does it matter?

Managing your professional online brand and ensuring that it remains consistent with your real-life brand is an ongoing ever evolving process.
But where to start?

I personally find this tool simple to use, and well worth the 10 minutes it takes to complete the process to asses your name online. Yes it’s also free and despite encouraging you to dig a bit deeper in some of the questions, it’s quick and straightforward. The plug to buy the book at the end in the results page is to be expected, although not obligatory.

However is it all about the results?….. Absolutely not.

The act of running frequent google audits on your name is the important factor here, and like many (free) tools, it’s the thought process that the Online ID Calculator™- takes you through rather than the actual results from the Calculator.

Similar to the leadership principle ‘Show me Don’t tell me’ keeping a close tab on your online presence is as critical as running a spell check through your CV. Sloppy & Careless does not radiate ‘Hire Me’ in anyone’s books.

My rule of thumbs is audit your online presence around every three months at the very least, and consider setting a Google alert for your name. This means that whenever there is an online presence created in your name (or the words you create in an alert) you will be immediately notified.

       How to Create a Google alert

  1. Visit Google Alerts.
  2. In the “Create an alert about” box, enter the words you want to get email notifications for.
  3. Click Show options to say how often you get alerts, what types of results you want to get, and more.
  4. Click Create Alert.
  5. Once your alert is set up, you’ll start getting emails any time we find new search results for your keywords.
